Dr. James Allen Appointed to NIH Standing Review Committee and National Academy of Sciences Steering Committee
Congratulations! Dr. James Allen was appointed by the Deputy Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to serve as a member of the Epidemiology, Prevention and Behavior Research Review Subcommittee of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Initial Review Group, (AA-2) of the NIH. Review Committee members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements, and honors.
Dr. James Allen was also nominated to serve as a member of a steering committee on National Statistics of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. This committee is planning a day and a half workshop held on November 30 and Dec 1, 2017, on Improving Health Research on Small Populations for the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. The focus of the workshop will be to discuss issues of conducting research on small, underrepresented population subgroups in health research. There continue to be communities that are often difficult to include in research studies because of the size, dispersion, and/or accessibility of the subpopulation, and the workshop will consider ways of addressing the challenges of research and interventions with small population groups, including alternative study designs, innovative methodologies, and innovative statistical techniques.
